MFL (French)

The learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils which fosters curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.

They develop linguistic competence and extend their knowledge of how language works making them able to communicate their ideas in that language and be able to understand and respond to other speakers in both speech and writing.

The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross – curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects. Learning a language from a young age will develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.

 Our curriculum aims to:

  • Foster an interest and appreciation of learning other languages
  • Introduce young children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun
  • Stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language
  • Encourage children to be aware that language has a structure and that the structure differs from one language to another
  • Encourage children to use different vocabulary when speaking to different audiences (formal / informal language)
  • Develop their speaking and listening skills, alongside their reading and writing skills.
  • Lay the foundations for future study
  • Extend pupils’ understanding of citizenship, encompassing a global dimension
