Geography
The primary focus in Geography lessons at St. John’s is to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. ‘Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes’ (Geography Primary National Curriculum). We also believe it is important to instil a sense of stewardship for the Earth. To achieve this, we have split the National Curriculum into five key areas, which are revisited throughout the topics:
- Locational knowledge
- Place knowledge
- Human geography
- Physical geography
- Geographical skills and fieldwork
In Geography lessons, we believe it is essential for our children’s development to link these skills to global issues as and when they arise such as recent flooding and climate change as well as teaching about sustainability in Year 6.
